Fixed duration marriages
Unhappy couples in Mexico City may soon be able to end their marriages without going through a divorce, reports the Guardian.
Currently, around 50% of marriages in Mexico City end in divorce, usually within the first two years. Politicians there are now proposing to introduce temporary marriage licenses, which would allow couples to agree in advance how long they would like their marriage to last, subject to a minimum of two years. This marriage contract would also set out what would happen to property and any children at the end of the relationship.
When the fixed term contract comes to an end, the couple can decide if they wish to continue with the marriage. If they choose not to, the end of the contract will also bring about the end of the marriage.
